Forgiving Michael Vick…

Published by djwhite at 12:49 pm under African-American, Blogging Edit This

Mike Vick

will be a difficult work in progress or should  I say, for me a very difficult work in progress.

Yes, I know the Bible says we are to forgive others seven times seventy. Whether people believe scripture or not (I do) sometimes the commandment to forgive is a difficult task to accomplish. At least at times, I find it very difficult to achieve.

Martin Luther King stated in his “I Have a Dream” speech that he wanted Black-Americans to be judged not by the color of our skin but, by the content of our character.

Now, here comes Mike Vick, a high profile Black-American Sports Star, participating in the insidiously evil sport of dog-fighting. Yes, he did his time by man’s law but can we forgive?

This makes me wonder what Dr. King would think or say about the character of this man and those of his  ilk.

To watch and/or participate in the torture of animals for sport says quite a bit about a person’s character.

I believe Vick wanted to prove to his home-boys that he hadn’t forgotten from where he came — the ghetto.

You can’t tell me or convince me that people from the ghetto have no moral fortitude.

I don’t want to hear about how Vick grew up without a father. I don’t want to hear that his mother didn’t teach him any better.  That’s all crap.

Dog-fighting crosses all racial lines so no, it’s not just a Black “thang”.

However, this cruelty is a thing of the morally bankrupt.

It’s the sport of knuckle dragging neanderthals with the cognitive ability of an amoeba.

These are men and yes, some women, who have the moral compass of bottom feeding sludge suckers.

Now, the NFL has reinstated Mr.[guffaw] Vick.  The NFL’s public relations and their advertisers are working over-time distancing Vick from his flawed character.

Can they do it?

Can Vick do it?

Can we forgive him?

I don’t know. I’m wondering how a man’s toxic character can be buried and forgotten.

A lobotomy?

A heart transplant?

A good butt whoop’n?

I look at my dog and wonder how I’d react if someone tortured him like that.

Ok, I lied, I know how I’d react — I’d be in jail if I could lay my hands on those type of beings who impersonate the human species.

Yes, for me,  forgiveness will be a long, long work in progress. I’m just so…human and flawed that way.

I think Michael Vick let greed get in the way of what he should have been doing. He’s paid for that greed, and has appologized, and wants to get on with his life, so we should give him a chance. Hope is the only thing that really gives us all solice (for me it comes from God), so let’s hope this young man will choose the right path from now on. I say give him a chance, and forget what he has done unless he repeats the offense.

I shouldn’t be such a skeptic but… I pray you and others are right.
